Nudge a Clip With kdenlive

I was a long-time user of Screenflow on Mac OS for editing video. Now I use kdenlive on Linux, but sparingly, since I don’t edit video much any more. Today, I wanted to edit some video, but I couldn’t figure out how to nudge a clip in order to synchronize the audio to the video. Searching the kdenlive Manual did not help me, because there was no match for “nudge”.

The Solution

The feature is framed as “grab a clip, then move it”. Read about it in the Keyboard Navigation section in User Interface > Timeline > Timeline (yes, twice).

  • Select your clip(s).
  • Press Shift+G or choose Menu > Sequence > Grab Current Item.
  • Now use the arrow keys, which will nudge the clip one frame at a time, rather than move the playhead.

The Lesson

When switching between applications in the same domain, we need to be prepared for at least two kind of translation challenges:

  • Using different words.
  • Framing the same concept differently.

This is not merely a matter of translating “nudge” as “grab”, because those are not synonyms. This is more a matter of translating between conceptual frames of reference, from nudging to grabbing-and-moving.
